# Lesson Categories

The **Lesson Categories** section allows you to organize lessons into categorized groups for better navigation and filtering throughout your LMS. Categories can also be structured hierarchically using parent-child relationships.

**Add New Lesson Category**

To create a new Lesson Category, navigate to **Dashboard > LMS > Lesson Categories** and click on **"Add New Lesson Category"**. Fill in the following fields:

**Name**

* The display name of the lesson category.
* This is how the category will appear on your site and in lesson filtering options.

**Slug**

* A **URL-friendly version** of the category name.
* Typically all lowercase, using only **letters, numbers, and hyphens** (e.g., `basic-guitar`).

**Parent Lesson Category**

* Select a **parent category** if you'd like to nest this new category under an existing one.
* Example: *Jazz* can be a parent category, with *Bebop* and *Big Band* as its children.

**Description**

* A short description of the category.
* This may not be displayed by default, depending on your theme, but can be shown in some layouts or widgets.

### **Usage Tips**

* Use descriptive and meaningful names to help learners easily navigate your content.
* Hierarchical structuring is useful for subjects with subtopics.
